B2 First Common Errors 5

See if you can correct these mistakes (the solutions are below)

Mistakes

My father lives upstairs with her wife

For me it's an habitude to...

This piece of art it is a painting called “Les demoiselles d’Avignon”

When I was in the high school, at the art lesson

It’s a painting of Picasso, made at the beginning of the XX sec.

I like it because it’s one of the first painting who breaks the rules from the tradition of the Impressionist painters.

Solutions

My father lives upstairs with his wife. The possessive adjective depends on the subject in English, not the object.

For me it's a habit to...

This piece of art is a painting called “Les demoiselles d’Avignon”.

When I was at high school, in an art lesson. Sometimes prepositions in English don't have rules. You might have to remember the specific collocations:

It’s a painting by Picasso, made at the beginning of the 20th century.

I like it because it’s one of the first paintings which breaks the rules from the tradition of the Impressionist painters. In English, if you say 'one of the + superlative', the next word should be plural. Also, use the relative pronoun 'which' in this sentence because we are not talking about a person.

Mistakes

It can be complicated to do the right expression

It's long time I make bread

He prepared his flour very good

Or at lunch or at dinner

Solutions

It can be complicated to find/use the right expression

It's been a long time since I made bread

He prepared his flour very well. 'Well' is an adverb. 'Good' is an adjective. We should use an adverb here because the word is describing the verb 'prepared' and adverbs describe verbs.

Either at lunch or at dinner. You should say 'either...or...' in English.
