English For Nurses

Are you a nurse who is currently living in or thinking of working in an English speaking country?

Do you find it difficult to understand everything a patient or colleague is telling you?

A hospital environment can be a very stressful place with lots of pressure put on hospital staff every day. This pressure increases when you are working in a country where people do not speak in your first language.

We have taught several nurses both at hospitals and privately throughout the United Kingdom and we understand the difficulties that nursing staff face. Many nurses work long shifts of 12 hours or more and are constantly on their feet.

Our English for Nurses courses and lessons aim to help make your job easier.

These courses are generally aimed at nurses with a B1/B2 level of English.

We offer group classes both at hospitals and online.

Course Content

Our online courses mainly focus on communication skills. For example, we know that understanding patients can be a particularly difficult area. Therefore we do lots of role plays of different scenarios and listening practices using different accents. We also focus on body language, vocabulary and typical English expressions that English people use to show empathy for a patient. We also practise making and receiving telephone calls. This is a necessary skill which can cause big problems if hospital staff do not manage them correctly. Another topic we normally discuss is British cultural tendencies. British people are often quite reserved (don't express their thoughts clearly) and we apologise all the time 😉 ! One more topic we discuss is British hospital working environments and how these can differ from your hospitals in your country.

Typical things we cover in our lessons are:

Listening skills. As a nurse in the UK, you will speak with many patients and colleagues from different towns, regions and countries. We practise listening skills and techniques to help you understand and respond to patients with different accents.

Telephone skills. Many nurses and doctors in the UK will be required to make and receive telephone calls. We understand how difficult and daunting this can be. Don't worry, we can practise these as much as you want.

Our private lessons can focus on any language, nursing or hospital related topic that you want.
